The global transport industry is undergoing significant changes due to rising trade protectionism and tariff wars, which are reshaping the flow of goods across borders, according to the head of the International Transport Forum (ITF).
"The global trade war affects what kind of goods we transport, leading to major shifts in trade patterns between countries," said Kim Young-tae, Secretary General of the ITF, during a group media briefing at the 2025 ITF Summit in Leipzig, Germany.
Kim emphasized that the transport sector must adapt to evolving global dynamics, as changes in tariffs directly influence supply and demand for tradable goods such as automobiles.
He also highlighted that geopolitical tensions, such as those in the Red Sea&mdash;a crucial maritime route&mdash;can disrupt and reshape global shipping routes, further complicating logistics.
The Trump administration's trade measures, including 25 percent tariffs on imports from several countries including South Korea, were briefly paused for 90 days. These policies, along with sector-specific tariffs on steel and cars, are expected to contribute to a projected 1 percent decline in global container shipping volume in 2025, according to maritime consultancy Drewry.
"We are closely monitoring global developments, considering both trade and climate change impacts, to forecast the future of the transport industry," Kim added.
The 2025 ITF Summit concluded Friday after a three-day meeting attended by transport leaders from over 80 countries, including South Korea and the United States. The summit focused on enhancing transport resilience in response to global disruptions.
South Korean Transport Minister Park Sang-woo presented his country&rsquo;s initiatives to reduce carbon emissions by promoting public transportation and transitioning to electric vehicles.
Addressing the role of artificial intelligence in the transport sector, Kim noted that the ITF&rsquo;s policy recommendations could guide global efforts to establish consistent standards for the safe and responsible use of AI across different countries.
