The BSE Sensex breached the 80,000-mark for the first time on Monday, powered by a strong rally in banking and infrastructure stocks amid positive domestic cues. The 30-share index closed at 80,109, registering a significant gain of 992 points, or 1.25 percent.
The broader NSE Nifty also showed remarkable strength, climbing 314 points to end at 24,221, while the Bank Nifty emerged as a standout performer, surging 2.10 percent to reach 52,207.
The market rally was comprehensive, with midcap and smallcap indices advancing over 1.5 percent each. Infrastructure and capital goods sectors led the gains, with L&amp;T, SBI, and Adani Ports emerging as top performers among blue-chip stocks.
Market experts attributed the bullish sentiment to recent state election outcomes, which they say have raised expectations of sustained government spending on infrastructure projects in the second half of FY25.
"The rally was broad-based, with capex-linked sectors outperforming on expectations of increased order inflows," said a market analyst, requesting anonymity.
Domestic institutional investors remained net buyers with purchases worth Rs 1,722.15 crore, offsetting foreign institutional selling of Rs 1,278.37 crore.
The market's positive momentum builds on its previous performance, with the Sensex adding nearly 3,000 points in the last two trading sessions.
