The Indian stock market closed on a flat note Thursday as traders held back from making big moves ahead of the high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15.
The Sensex gained 57 points or 0.07% to settle at 80,597.66 after oscillating between an intra-day high of 80,751.18 and a low of 80,489.86. The index had opened slightly higher at 80,625.28, maintaining the previous session&rsquo;s momentum but remaining range-bound for most of the day. Nifty inched up 11.95 points or 0.05% to end at 24,631.30.
Buying was seen in IT, pharma, banking, and consumer durable counters, buoyed by softer US inflation data and hopes of a consumption-led recovery. However, metals and energy stocks slipped on the back of falling commodity prices and oversupply concerns.
Market sentiment also drew some support from S&amp;P&rsquo;s recent upgrade of India&rsquo;s credit rating with a stable outlook, citing robust policy continuity and infrastructure-led growth. Analysts expect the market to remain in a tight range in the near term, with global political events in focus.
Top gainers from the Sensex pack included Infosys, Asian Paints, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Titan, and Maruti Suzuki. On the flip side, Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra, BEL, Ultratech Cement, Hindustan Unilever, and HCL Tech ended lower.
Among sectoral indices, Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Bank, and Nifty IT closed higher, while Nifty FMCG and Nifty Auto dragged. Broader markets largely followed a weak trend, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 both ending in the red.
The rupee slipped 10 paise to close at 87.54 against the US dollar, with traders eyeing Friday&rsquo;s Trump-Putin dialogue for cues on global stability and currency movement.
