US President Donald Trump has said that India and the US are still in talks to strike a bilateral trade agreement, even after he publicly threatened to impose a 25% tariff and additional penalties for importing Russian energy.
&ldquo;India is willing to cut tariffs very substantially,&rdquo; Trump remarked on Wednesday, hours after his sharp comments targeting both trade imbalance and India&rsquo;s ties with Russia.
He avoided directly addressing the penalty for Russian energy imports, instead pointing fingers at BRICS nations, including India, for being "anti-United States" and attempting to "attack the dollar."
India responded strongly, asserting it would protect national interests, especially concerning agriculture, MSMEs, and farmer welfare, a likely sticking point in the ongoing negotiations.
India&rsquo;s Commerce Ministry reiterated its commitment to a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial deal. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently stated that progress was &ldquo;fantastic&rdquo; and a &ldquo;consequential partnership&rdquo; may soon be reached.
Although Trump has not issued a formal tariff order for India yet, unlike for other countries, his threats may be part of a negotiation tactic. The week ahead may clarify whether a final agreement is reached.
