<p data-start="81" data-end="361"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">India has emerged as the world&rsquo;s second-largest fish producer, with inland fisheries production soaring by 142% since 2013&ndash;14 to reach 147 lakh tonnes, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh announced at a recent event.</span></p>
<p data-start="363" data-end="551"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Highlighting a strong annual growth rate of 9% &mdash; the highest among all agri-allied sectors &mdash; the minister noted that the fisheries sector supports the livelihoods of nearly 3 crore people.</span></p>
<p data-start="553" data-end="903"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Singh outlined major initiatives including the Blue Revolution, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), PM-MKSSY, and the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme, through which over ₹38,500 crore has been invested to upgrade infrastructure and promote inclusive growth in the sector.</span></p>
<p data-start="905" data-end="1125"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">States were encouraged to optimize use of FIDF, coordinate closely with ICAR for timely implementation, and tap into opportunities in Coldwater Fisheries, ornamental fish farming, and saline aquaculture to boost exports.</span></p>
<p data-start="1127" data-end="1441"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">The minister emphasized the strategic use of inland water resources to enhance nutrition, raise output, and contribute to the broader vision of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India). He also commended the significant progress made by inland states and called for further efforts to boost production and productivity.</span></p>
<p data-start="1443" data-end="1813"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Minister of State Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel added that fisheries can play a vital role in doubling farmers&rsquo; income. He highlighted the importance of regular monitoring, technology adoption, and enhanced productivity. He also pointed to the potential of Amrit Sarovars for Rohu and Catla farming, and the need to strengthen cold storage, transport, and market connectivity.</span></p>
<p data-start="1815" data-end="2149"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">George Kurian, also Minister of State, underlined the transformative role of inland fisheries in ensuring nutritional security, rural development, and sustainable livelihoods. He stressed integrating traditional wisdom with modern innovation, promoting native fish species, and empowering local communities through cooperative action.</span></p>
<p data-start="2151" data-end="2321" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node=""><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Over 300 fisheries start-ups involved in digital tools, value addition, and post-harvest solutions are also being supported as part of the sector&rsquo;s modernization efforts.</span></p>
