India&rsquo;s fuel demand saw a 1.94% year-on-year increase in June, reaching 20.31 million metric tonnes, driven by higher consumption of petrol, diesel, and LPG, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said on Monday.
Petrol sales jumped 6.7% due to strong car and two-wheeler sales, alongside rural demand recovery powered by a more vibrant agriculture sector.
Diesel consumption, a key indicator of economic activity, rose 1.6% to 8.11 million tonnes, reflecting higher usage in both farm operations and logistics. Diesel remains the most consumed fuel in India, making up about 40% of the country&rsquo;s fuel sales.
LPG sales surged by 9.1%, hitting 2.53 million tonnes, as household adoption grew thanks to higher incomes and the government&rsquo;s Ujjwala scheme. Commercial use in restaurants and hotels also saw an uptick.
Naphtha consumption, largely used in fertilizer production, climbed 2% to 1.03 million tonnes.
However, month-on-month fuel demand fell 4.7% due to the early arrival of the monsoon in June.
India remains the world&rsquo;s third-largest oil consumer and importer, and fuel sales are seen as a key economic indicator.
Meanwhile, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured citizens last month that India&rsquo;s energy supply remains secure despite geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. With diversified imports from Russia, the US, and underground reserves, India has reduced reliance on routes through the Strait of Hormuz, he noted.
