India has emerged stronger in global foreign direct investment (FDI) rankings, climbing to 15th place in 2024 from 16th in 2023, according to the UNCTAD&rsquo;s 'World Investment Report 2025'. While FDI inflows dipped slightly to $27.6 billion from $28.1 billion, India retained its lead as South Asia&rsquo;s top FDI recipient.
A standout performer in project announcements, India saw projected capital expenditure rise over 25% to $110 billion, accounting for nearly a third of all such investments in Asia. The country ranked fourth globally with 1,080 greenfield projects in 2024 and made it to the top 10 investor countries in outbound greenfield investments, with a 20% rise.
UNCTAD noted a surge in India's manufacturing sector, led by semiconductor and basic metal projects. India was also among the top five economies for international project finance, clocking 97 transactions.
Energy and gas remained the highest-value sector globally, comprising 14% of total project value. India's investments in renewable and energy infrastructure reflected its policy focus on energy transition, bolstered by blended finance and enabling frameworks.
While global FDI saw an 11% drop overall, UNCTAD pointed out that only select economies like India managed strong gains in productive investment. UN Trade and Development Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan emphasised the need for realignment of capital flows to drive development outcomes and stability in volatile global markets.
