India is rapidly emerging as a critical player in Apple&rsquo;s global manufacturing and supply chain strategy, reinforcing its status as the most viable alternative to China. With a combination of competitive costs, a skilled workforce, and expanding infrastructure, the country is attracting increasing interest from global tech giants, particularly Apple.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple has reassured the Indian government that it remains fully committed to its manufacturing plans in the country and continues to support the 'Make in India' initiative. &ldquo;There is no change in Apple&rsquo;s investment plans in India,&rdquo; said a person close to the development.
In recent years, India has positioned itself as a central manufacturing hub for Apple. The tech giant has significantly expanded its production footprint across the country, sourcing and assembling various iPhone models locally, including those intended for export.
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized this shift earlier this month, stating, &ldquo;Apple has decided to source and produce all its mobile phones in India in the years to come. When you invest in India, you choose affordability, reliability, and originality.&rdquo;
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently confirmed that a majority of iPhones for the U.S. market will be manufactured in India during the April&ndash;June quarter of 2025, while China will cater to other global markets.
Despite political pressure in the U.S. to bring manufacturing back home, industry experts highlight the challenges of replicating Asia&rsquo;s tightly integrated supply chains in the United States. According to Prabhu Ram, Vice President at CyberMedia Research (CMR), &ldquo;Most components would still need to be sourced from Asia. Any meaningful shift to the U.S. would require long-term investment and may prove both costly and complex.&rdquo;
Ram added that India&rsquo;s role in Apple&rsquo;s ecosystem will continue to deepen. &ldquo;With scalable, high-quality manufacturing, a strong talent pool, and a pro-business policy environment, India is becoming a strategic node in Apple&rsquo;s global supply network&mdash;for both domestic sales and exports.&rdquo;
Apple's growth in India reflects this evolving strategy. According to a recent report by IDC, Apple recorded a 23% year-on-year growth in the January&ndash;March 2025 quarter, shipping a record 3 million units&mdash;its highest-ever first-quarter shipment in the country. The iPhone 16 emerged as the top-selling model, accounting for 4% of total smartphone shipments in Q1.
While U.S. leaders, including former President Donald Trump, have publicly pushed Apple to invest more in American manufacturing, the operational reality favors India. With its expanding capabilities, India is set to play an even larger role in Apple&rsquo;s long-term production and distribution plans.
As Apple continues to scale up its investments, India&rsquo;s stature as a trusted, strategic, and economically sound manufacturing destination only grows stronger&mdash;positioning it as a pivotal alternative to China in the tech supply chain of the future.
