HD Hyundai has announced a strategic collaboration with India&rsquo;s largest shipbuilder, Cochin Shipyard Ltd., marking a significant milestone in the shipbuilding industry. This partnership is the first of its kind between a South Korean and Indian shipbuilding firm.
HD Korea Shipbuilding &amp; Offshore Engineering Co., a key shipbuilding arm of HD Hyundai, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Cochin Shipyard to enhance bilateral cooperation in shipbuilding technology and global competitiveness.
According to company officials, HD Hyundai will support Cochin Shipyard in advancing its technological capabilities and increasing productivity to match global standards. The two companies also aim to jointly pursue shipbuilding contracts in India and other international markets.
HD Hyundai emphasized its commitment to expanding operations in India, the world&rsquo;s most populous country, which is actively investing in its ocean economy. The Indian government has set ambitious goals to become one of the world&rsquo;s top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030 and among the top five by 2047.
An HD Hyundai spokesperson described the partnership as a "turning point" that aligns with India&rsquo;s maritime development vision. &ldquo;With HD Hyundai&rsquo;s technological expertise and experience, we aim to help Cochin Shipyard strengthen its global competitiveness while fostering mutual growth, including collaboration with Korean equipment suppliers,&rdquo; the official said.
Meanwhile, South Korea maintained a strong position in global shipbuilding in June. The country secured new orders totaling 1.05 million compensated gross tonnes (CGTs) for eight ships, capturing 41% of the global market share, according to data from London-based Clarkson Research Services.
