In a landmark move that could reshape India&rsquo;s digital future, Google has announced an investment of $15 billion to build a massive AI and data infrastructure hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This will be the company&rsquo;s largest AI hub outside the United States, marking a major step in its global expansion strategy. Sundar Pichai, who called the project a &ldquo;landmark development,&rdquo; highlighted its scale and impact, saying it combines gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure to power the next wave of innovation.
The ambitious initiative, called &ldquo;AI City Vizag,&rdquo; aims to transform Visakhapatnam into a global technology powerhouse. It will include a 1-gigawatt data centre campus, advanced AI computing facilities, undersea cable infrastructure, and a robust energy backbone. The project will be spread across Adavivaram, Tarluvada, and Rambilli in Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts, positioning the region as a key digital hub on India&rsquo;s east coast. Construction is expected to begin in March 2026, with the first phase likely to become operational by mid-2028.
The Andhra Pradesh government has already approved infrastructure proposals worth over ₹87,000 crore for the project. It is expected to generate more than 1.8 lakh jobs, creating new opportunities in technology, infrastructure, and services. The AI hub will also reduce India&rsquo;s dependence on overseas compute facilities by providing large-scale processing power within the country, boosting innovation and AI research.
To support the initiative, Google has partnered with Bharti Airtel and Adani Group for telecom connectivity, energy support, and ecosystem development. This strategic partnership will help ensure seamless infrastructure and global connectivity through subsea cable gateways.
The announcement comes at a time when the race to build AI infrastructure is accelerating across the world. With this investment, Visakhapatnam is set to join the ranks of global digital hubs and emerge as a critical node for AI innovation in Asia. It also aligns with India&rsquo;s national ambition to become a global AI powerhouse, encouraging startups, researchers, and industries to build and scale their solutions locally.
Sundar Pichai discussed the project with Narendra Modi in New Delhi, emphasizing its long-term vision for India&rsquo;s technology ecosystem. For Andhra Pradesh, the project brings economic growth, employment, and international attention, while for Google, it cements its leadership in AI infrastructure. The Vizag AI hub is not just an investment in technology but a strategic step that places India at the heart of the global AI revolution.
