Fuel Price Cuts Offer Relief to Consumers and Carriers Alike as Crude Slumps to Four-Year Low

In a move with far-reaching economic implications, India&rsquo;s public sector oil marketing companies have reduced the price of commercial LPG cylinders and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), reflecting the broader trend of falling global crude prices. This latest round of cuts is expected to provide inflationary relief while easing operational pressures for the aviation sector.
On Thursday, the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder was slashed by ₹14.50, a modest but welcome reprieve for the hotel, restaurant, and catering industry. More significantly, ATF rates were cut by 4.4%, amounting to a reduction of ₹3,954.38 per kilolitre, bringing the new price down to ₹85,486.80 per kl. This follows an earlier cut of ₹5,870.54 per kl (6.15%) implemented on 1 April, effectively rolling back much of the year&rsquo;s earlier price increases.
The decline in jet fuel costs will offer timely relief to airlines such as IndiGo and Air India, where fuel constitutes nearly 30% of total operational expenses. In a high-cost, low-margin business, this reduction improves the prospects of cost rationalisation and potentially cheaper airfares&mdash;offering some stimulus to post-pandemic travel demand.
This downward trajectory in fuel prices is underpinned by a slump in international crude oil benchmarks. Brent crude is currently hovering around $63 per barrel, the lowest since April 2021. The fall has been largely driven by slowing global demand and a strategic shift by Saudi Arabia, which has signalled it will no longer intervene aggressively through output cuts to support prices. This stance could diminish the price-setting clout traditionally wielded by OPEC.
For a nation like India&mdash;dependent on imports for nearly 85% of its crude oil needs&mdash;the softening of global prices is economically significant. A cheaper import bill aids in narrowing the current account deficit, provides a fillip to the rupee, and relieves pressure on the government&rsquo;s energy subsidy burden.
Moreover, subdued fuel prices are likely to ease inflationary pressures, particularly in the transport and logistics sectors, which are highly sensitive to energy costs. This could have a cascading effect, reducing the cost of goods movement and, eventually, retail prices&mdash;a key metric closely monitored by the Reserve Bank of India in its monetary policy deliberations.
However, even as crude prices fall, the government had, just last month, raised excise duties on petrol and diesel to augment fiscal resources. The burden of this increase is being absorbed by the three major public sector oil companies&mdash;Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation&mdash;whose margins have improved due to falling input costs.
According to the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, the decision to let oil marketing companies absorb the excise duty hike is part of a broader strategy to stabilise domestic fuel prices and ensure consumer interests are protected without undermining fiscal consolidation goals.
As the global energy landscape undergoes recalibration, India's ability to leverage lower crude prices to manage its macroeconomic fundamentals will be critical. For now, the fall in fuel prices provides a much-needed breather for both consumers and businesses&mdash;particularly as the economy continues to grapple with inflationary pressures and sluggish global trade.
