Coal India Limited (CIL) aims to ramp up production in the coming months to meet its target of 875 million tonnes for the financial year 2025&ndash;26, Chairman and Managing Director Sanoj Kumar Jha said on Sunday.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 59th Foundation Day celebration of Hindustan Copper Ltd, Jha said, &ldquo;Today I can&rsquo;t say we will not meet the production target (for 2025-26). I can&rsquo;t say we will meet. But we will aspire that we will be able to be there or near there.&rdquo;
CIL, which contributes about 80% of India&rsquo;s total coal output, saw its production affected during September and October due to prolonged monsoon rains that disrupted mining operations.
The CMD, however, expressed confidence that the company would be able to meet industrial demand and close the fiscal with higher coal stocks than the previous year. 
CIL has also set a despatch target of 900 million tonnes for 2025&ndash;26.
Coal India&rsquo;s production declined 9.8% in October to 56.4 million tonnes, though this was an improvement over 48.97 million tonnes in September. 
The company plans to accelerate output over the remaining five months of the fiscal to make up for the shortfall.
In FY25, CIL produced 781 million tonnes, while India&rsquo;s overall coal output, including captive and commercial mines, crossed the one billion tonne mark and is expected to reach 1.15 billion tonnes in FY26.
Jha, who took charge as Chairman-cum-Managing Director on November 1, also said regulations for the proposed coal exchange will be in place within six months.
The draft rules for the exchange are expected to be finalised by the end of November after reviewing public feedback, according to Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt.&nbsp;
The proposed framework designates the Coal Controller Organisation (CCO) as the authority to register and regulate coal exchanges across the country.
