The Centre has concluded the latest phase of its commercial coal mining push, auctioning three major coal blocks in Jharkhand and Odisha with an expected capital infusion of nearly ₹7,350 crore. The Ministry of Coal said the blocks together are projected to generate over ₹4,620 crore in annual revenue and create more than 66,000 jobs across mining belts.
Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) emerged as the top bidder for all three blocks; Pirpainti Barahat, Dhulia North and Mandakini-B marking a significant expansion of its footprint in the coal sector. The fully explored mines collectively hold geological reserves of 3,306 million tonnes and have a combined peak-rated capacity of 49 MTPA, giving them critical strategic value for boosting domestic output.
With these auctions, the government&rsquo;s commercial mining programme launched in 2020, has now allocated 136 coal blocks, carrying a total production potential of over 325 MTPA. Once these mines become operational, officials expect them to contribute around ₹43,330 crore in annual revenue, draw close to ₹49,000 crore in investment, and generate more than 4.3 lakh employment opportunities.
The ministry said its reforms ranging from incentives for early production to eased norms for commercial sales have transformed the coal landscape from a restrictive end-use model to a competitive market-driven regime. Forward auctions for the 13th round were conducted from November 20&ndash;25, with the government calling the shift a key step toward India's long-term goal of coal self-reliance.
