In a major leap for financial inclusion, 118 million women in India have entered the formal credit system for the first time in the past decade, according to a report by TransUnion CIBIL.
Overall, more than 714 million Indians have gained access to credit in the last 20 years, reshaping household finances and improving the country&rsquo;s financial landscape. Notably, retail delinquencies (90+ days overdue) have dropped by 130 basis points over the same period, signalling improved credit behaviour.
As credit reaches previously underserved segments, emphasis is growing on data-driven lending, risk transparency, and financial literacy.
RBI Deputy Governor M. Rajeshwar Rao emphasised the role of credit information companies (CICs) in strengthening India&rsquo;s financial ecosystem. He noted that financial literacy must be a continuous effort, not just a regulatory requirement.
"Empowered consumers are at the core of a sustainable credit landscape," Rao said, adding that all institutions must share the responsibility of financial education.
Bhavesh Jain, MD &amp; CEO of TransUnion CIBIL, echoed the sentiment, highlighting that the credit ecosystem in India is becoming more inclusive and future-ready through reliable data and responsible lending.
Axis Bank CEO Amitabh Chaudhry stressed the need to invest in borrower education, enabling long-term financial stability and credit health.
The report reinforces the critical role of digital data systems, CICs, and public-private collaboration in expanding India's credit footprint, particularly for women and first-time borrowers.
