Churachandpur district in Manipur witnessed a complete shutdown on Saturday as the Joint Student Body (JSB) called for a bandh to observe the second anniversary of the ethnic unrest in the state.
Commercial establishments, educational institutions, and local markets remained shut, while the streets were largely empty, indicating widespread public participation in the shutdown.
In a press statement released on Friday, Manipur Police reported that although the overall situation in the state remained tense, it was under control over the previous 24 hours. Security personnel carried out search operations and area domination activities in both hill and valley regions identified as fringe or vulnerable.
The press note further stated that several weapons were seized during these operations, and one individual involved in illegal arms smuggling was taken into custody.
Additionally, the safe passage of essential goods was maintained, with 346 vehicles moving along National Highway 2 and another 158 along National Highway 37. Police confirmed that comprehensive security arrangements were in place at sensitive points, and convoys were deployed in vulnerable areas to ensure the secure and uninterrupted movement of these vehicles.
The ethnic violence, which began in May 2023, has resulted in numerous deaths and forced displacement of thousands, exacerbating communal tensions across the northeastern state.
