Elon Musk&rsquo;s Starlink has received the final regulatory clearance from India&rsquo;s space regulator IN-SPACe, bringing the satellite-based internet service a step closer to its commercial rollout in India.
According to the final authorisation document seen by IANS, Starlink is now eligible to begin operations, subject to acquiring spectrum from the government and building required ground infrastructure. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to grant trial spectrum for security compliance testing.
With its first commercial deals signed with VSAT providers, Starlink is aiming to serve remote and underserved regions, where traditional broadband infrastructure is limited or absent.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently confirmed that all due diligence has been completed on the Indian side, and Starlink can launch &ldquo;as soon as regulatory steps are concluded.&rdquo;
Starlink currently runs the world&rsquo;s largest satellite internet constellation, with 6,750+ satellites in orbit, offering services across countries like Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and more.
Meanwhile, Amazon&rsquo;s Project Kuiper, a direct rival to Starlink, is also awaiting approvals from IN-SPACe and DoT for its satellite internet launch in India.
Starlink&rsquo;s entry could revolutionise affordable, high-speed internet access in rural and remote regions across the country.
