The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi for their pioneering work on metal&ndash;organic frameworks (MOFs), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Monday.

The laureates developed a new type of molecular architecture that creates large cavities through which molecules can pass in and out. These frameworks have been applied in diverse fields, including harvesting water from desert air, capturing carbon dioxide, removing pollutants from water, and storing hydrogen.

The academy said the breakthrough provides chemists with innovative tools to address pressing scientific and environmental challenges. MOFs are celebrated for their versatility and efficiency, enabling advances in sustainable energy, water purification, and environmental protection.

Last year, the Nobel in Chemistry was awarded to David Baker for computational protein design, and jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper for protein structure prediction, highlighting a continuing trend of recognising transformative research in molecular sciences.

Established by Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel, the Nobel Prizes honour achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace, with the Economic Sciences Prize added in 1968. Nobel&rsquo;s will directed that the majority of his estate fund awards for those who &ldquo;confer the greatest benefit to humankind.&rdquo;
