Microsoft has rolled out an urgent security patch following reports of active cyberattacks targeting on-premises SharePoint servers used by government bodies and businesses for internal document sharing.
According to Microsoft, the vulnerability&mdash;now catalogued as CVE-2025-53770&mdash;does not affect SharePoint Online (part of Microsoft 365), but poses serious risks to on-premise installations. The flaw involves a remote code execution bug caused by the deserialization of untrusted data.
&ldquo;Microsoft is aware of active attacks targeting on-premises SharePoint Server customers,&rdquo; the company said, urging users to apply the July security updates immediately.
In addition to patching, Microsoft recommends rotating ASP.NET machine keys and restarting IIS servers. Customers unable to enable AMSI (Antimalware Scan Interface) must rotate their keys after applying the update.
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalogue, mandating federal agencies to patch the servers by July 21, 2025.
The FBI has confirmed its involvement in monitoring the attacks and is coordinating with federal and private-sector partners.
The vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-53770 and CVE-2025-53771) are fully addressed in updates for SharePoint Subscription Edition and SharePoint 2019.
Microsoft emphasised that immediate action is critical to prevent further exploitation.
