India&rsquo;s semiconductor ambitions are shifting into gear, with the government and industry prioritising mature-node manufacturing instead of pursuing the most advanced technologies. The country is targeting the 28nm to 65nm range, widely used in automotive, telecom, and industrial electronics.
This strategy positions India to fill a crucial gap in the global semiconductor supply chain. While giants like TSMC and Samsung dominate advanced 3nm and 5nm nodes, India is carving out strength in the high-demand mature nodes that power essential industries.
Experts compare India&rsquo;s current stage to the semiconductor journeys of Taiwan and South Korea between the 1970s and 1990s. Alongside fabrication, India&rsquo;s role in system integration is expanding rapidly, with strong expertise in automotive electronics, consumer devices, telecom, and healthcare technologies.
The China+1 strategy is also boosting India&rsquo;s prospects, as companies look beyond China for reliable, cost-effective partners. This diversification is expected to help India capture a bigger global market share.
To fuel growth, the government launched the ₹76,000 crore Semicon India Programme in 2021, offering incentives for fabs, packaging units, and local supply chains. Earlier this month, four new projects worth ₹4,600 crore were cleared in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab, taking the India Semiconductor Mission tally to 10 projects with investments of ₹1.6 lakh crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed the country&rsquo;s resolve, announcing that made-in-India chips will reach markets by year-end. Six plants have already been approved, underscoring India&rsquo;s rise as a key player in mature-node chips and integration services.
