Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been selected to manufacture India&rsquo;s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), marking a major milestone in the country&rsquo;s commercial space sector. The announcement was made by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) on Friday.
The development represents one of the most significant technology transfers from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to a commercial entity. A Technology Transfer Agreement will soon be signed among HAL, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO, and IN-SPACe.
As part of the agreement, ISRO will provide intensive training and handholding to HAL teams at both ISRO and HAL facilities to facilitate the realisation and launch of two SSLVs within the next two years.
The selection followed a rigorous evaluation process assessing technological and financial preparedness. HAL emerged as the highest bidder and will now acquire and operationalise the SSLV technology.
IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka called it a defining moment for India's space sector, enabling HAL to independently build, own, and commercialise SSLV launches. &ldquo;This transfer underlines our commitment to building a $44 billion space economy by 2033,&rdquo; he added.
HAL Chairman D.K. Sunil expressed confidence in successfully executing the project with ISRO&rsquo;s guidance, stating, &ldquo;We aim to develop a robust ecosystem for small satellite launches from India.&rdquo;
