A major outage with Amazon Web Services (AWS) disrupted several popular online platforms in the United States on Monday, affecting Amazon.com, Prime Video, Alexa, and multiple third-party services including Perplexity AI, Canva, Robinhood, Snapchat, and Venmo.
According to reports on Downdetector, thousands of users began experiencing difficulties accessing these services, leading to widespread online complaints.
AWS confirms service disruption
In an update on its official status page, AWS acknowledged the problem, stating, &ldquo;We can confirm increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region.&rdquo;
Platforms respond to outage
Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed that the chatbot&rsquo;s downtime was linked to the AWS issue. 
&ldquo;Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We&rsquo;re working on resolving it,&rdquo; he said in a post on X.
Canva also reported disruptions, saying, &ldquo;We are currently experiencing significantly increased error rates which are impacting functionality on Canva. Our team is actively investigating the issue and working to restore full access as quickly as possible.&rdquo;
Online reaction
As platforms went offline, users flooded X (formerly Twitter) to discuss the outage. One user wrote, &ldquo;Wow, AWS went down and took half the internet with it.&rdquo;
Another remarked, &ldquo;Even Amazon.com is down. I don't recall that happening in past AWS outages. This must be a big one.&rdquo;
Others expressed frustration over apps like Snapchat going offline, with one user posting, &ldquo;Why is Snapchat and everything else down? I can&rsquo;t lose my snap streaks!&rdquo;
Meanwhile, another user humorously noted, &ldquo;Hey guys! So I just went on Downdetector to check if just a few things were down, and uhhh&hellip; this doesn&rsquo;t look great!&rdquo;
The outage, believed to be one of the most widespread in recent months, highlights the internet&rsquo;s heavy dependence on AWS infrastructure for day-to-day operations across multiple sectors.
