In a major political development for Maharashtra, estranged cousins Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray are set to share the stage for the first time in nearly two decades. The two leaders will reunite on Saturday, 5 July, at a public rally in Mumbai to champion the cause of the Marathi language&mdash;a move that has reignited speculation about a possible political realignment in the state known for its shifting alliances.
The much-anticipated event, billed as a 'Victory Rally' for Marathi unity, comes in the wake of the Mahayuti government&rsquo;s decision to suspend its proposed three-language policy. The joint opposition by both the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Shiv Sena (UBT) to the language formula is widely seen as the trigger for this rare show of unity.
The rally will take place at 10 am at the NSCI Dome in Worli, with thousands of Marathi speakers, writers, poets, educators, editors, and artists expected to attend. The 8,000-seat auditorium is likely to be filled beyond capacity, with organisers setting up large LED screens both inside and outside the venue to accommodate the anticipated overflow crowd.
Marathi film director and producer Ajit Bhure will anchor the event, which will see Raj and Uddhav Thackeray share the stage with party leaders and representatives. A grand backdrop featuring the map of Maharashtra and the slogan &lsquo;Awaz Marathicha&rsquo; (Voice of the Marathi People) has been prepared. MNS leader Yashwant Killedar said nearly 6,000 chairs have been arranged, with tents and screens set up along surrounding roads. &ldquo;We expect a spontaneous turnout. Traffic on Annie Besant Road may need to be halted,&rdquo; he added.
Though the rally is being jointly organised by the MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT), several senior leaders from allied parties are expected to be present. However, NCP (SP) founder Sharad Pawar and Congress leader Harshavardhan Sapkal are unlikely to attend, despite receiving invitations. MNS sources said they were unable to contact Sapkal, while Pawar is expected to remain in Mumbai but will give the event a miss.
In preparation for the rally, senior figures such as Anil Parab of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Bala Nandgaonkar of the MNS have been overseeing arrangements, coordinating with party workers over the past week to ensure a large turnout. Local leaders have been instructed to install LED screens in neighbourhoods across Mumbai.
Teasers showing the Thackeray cousins as lions confronting a pack of hyenas have been circulating on social media, while posters depicting the duo alongside the late Bal Thackeray have been plastered across Mumbai, particularly in Lalbaug, Parel, Dadar, Worli, and parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Slogans such as &ldquo;Who brings the government to its knees? The Marathi manoos,&rdquo; and &ldquo;Unity among Marathi people is the real strength&rdquo; dominate the campaign visuals.
&ldquo;The Marathi mandals have responded positively. A Jai Jawan Govinda Mandal will perform a human pyramid at the rally,&rdquo; said Kunal Manikar, MNS&rsquo;s western Mumbai chief.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar hinted that the rally may mark more than just cultural solidarity. &ldquo;Though this event is for the Marathi cause, it could pave the way for a renewed alliance between the cousins ahead of the local body elections,&rdquo; she said. Her colleague Vinayak Raut added, &ldquo;People from all over Maharashtra will come to witness this moment. Leaders from our allies, including Jayant Patil of the NCP (SP) as well as CPI and CPM members, will be present.&rdquo;
As the political landscape in Maharashtra evolves, the rally is being seen as both a celebration of linguistic pride and a potential prelude to new political equations. Whether this rare show of unity will reshape state politics remains to be seen, but for now, all eyes are on Worli, where the Thackeray cousins will take the stage together&mdash;invoking the spirit of Marathi identity and perhaps signalling a new chapter in their shared legacy.
