The Punjab Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution condemning the BJP-led Centre for its &ldquo;failure and lack of response&rdquo; in sanctioning a special financial package to tackle the devastation caused by recent floods in the state.
The resolution also criticised the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office (PMO) for ignoring repeated requests from Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for a meeting, calling it an &ldquo;insult&rdquo; to the people of Punjab and a barrier to presenting the full scale of the disaster.
The House noted that Punjab faced its worst floods since 1988, with over 20 lakh people affected, crops destroyed on nearly five lakh acres, livestock losses, and extensive damage to public and private infrastructure. Mann formally demanded a ₹20,000 crore relief package, but said that even the announced ₹1,600 crore aid has not been disbursed.
Unveiling state-level relief measures, Mann announced crop compensation of up to ₹20,000 per acre, ₹1.20 lakh for damaged houses, and assistance for farmers to clear sand and restore washed-away farmland. Compensation will begin before Diwali, following a special girdawari survey.
The resolution stated, &ldquo;This House condemns the BJP-led Union government&rsquo;s apathy, which has crippled Punjab&rsquo;s relief and rehabilitation efforts.&rdquo;
Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi had announced ₹1,600 crore during his Punjab visit, in addition to ₹12,000 crore already with the state. Mann, however, said the Centre gave time to meet the governor, but delayed his meeting with the PM. He is expected to meet Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday.
The floods, fueled by swollen rivers Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi, along with heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh, J&amp;K, and Punjab, have been described as among the most catastrophic in independent India.
