Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Monday initiate the much-awaited debate in Parliament to mark 150 years of the national song &ldquo;Vande Mataram,&rdquo; setting the stage for marathon discussions during the second week of the winter session.
The debate is part of the year-long celebrations commemorating the 150th anniversary of &ldquo;Vande Mataram,&rdquo; written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and set to tune by Jadunath Bhattacharya. 
The discussion, which has been allotted eight hours, will begin in the Lok Sabha with the Prime Minister&rsquo;s address on Monday. 
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will open the debate in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the matter.
&ldquo;Many important and lesser-known facets related to Vande Mataram will come before the nation,&rdquo; the person said.
From the Trinamool Congress, MPs Mahua Moitra and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar will speak in the Lok Sabha, while Sukhendu S. Roy and Ritabrata Banerjee will address the Rajya Sabha, a senior TMC leader said on condition of anonymity. 
The MPs are set to speak in Bengali to add further weight to the debate, the leader added.
The Congress has nominated its deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, while party president Mallikarjun Kharge will be the principal Opposition speaker in the Rajya Sabha.
Recently, Prime Minister Modi had accused the Congress of removing key stanzas from the national song in 1937 and &ldquo;sowing the seeds of partition.&rdquo; 
On November 7, he had launched the year-long celebrations of the 150th anniversary of &ldquo;Vande Mataram,&rdquo; with a special focus on engaging youth and students to deepen awareness of the song&rsquo;s historical and national significance.
Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha will also take up a debate on election reforms on Tuesday, which will cover all aspects of the issue, including the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. 
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is expected to speak on the subject. 
The Rajya Sabha will take up the election reforms debate on Wednesday.
Last week, in a major breakthrough, the government and the Opposition agreed to hold discussions on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in the Lok Sabha, which will be preceded by the debate marking the 150th year of &ldquo;Vande Mataram.&rdquo; 
The decision raised hopes of smoother proceedings after two days of disruptions in the winter session.
Confirming the schedule, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said after an all-party meeting chaired by the Lok Sabha Speaker that the discussion on the 150th anniversary of &ldquo;Vande Mataram&rdquo; will begin at 12 noon on Monday, December 8, followed by the debate on election reforms at 12 noon on Tuesday, December 9.
