Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited Manipur for the first time since the ethnic clashes of 2023, assuring the people that both he and the Centre stand firmly with the state in its path to recovery.
Addressing a public gathering in Churachandpur, Modi struck a conciliatory tone. &ldquo;I promise you, I am with you. The Government of India is with you. We stand with the people of Manipur,&rdquo; he said in Hindi, drawing applause from the crowd.
Calling Manipur a land of &ldquo;hope and promise,&rdquo; the Prime Minister said that despite the turmoil of the past year, the state is beginning to heal. He recalled his interaction with families displaced by the violence and living in relief camps. &ldquo;After speaking with them, I can say that a new dawn of hope and trust is emerging in Manipur,&rdquo; he remarked.
Modi underscored that peace is the foundation of development and pointed to the larger changes in the Northeast over the last decade. &ldquo;In the past eleven years, several old disputes and conflicts in the region have ended. The people have chosen the path of peace and given priority to progress,&rdquo; he said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted recent dialogue efforts between groups in the hills and valleys. These discussions, he noted, are part of the Centre&rsquo;s approach that emphasises dialogue, respect, and understanding to restore harmony. &ldquo;I appeal to all organisations to move forward on the path of peace, fulfil your dreams, and secure the future of your children,&rdquo; Modi said.
To support those affected by the unrest, the government has cleared a special package worth nearly ₹3,500 crore, which includes ₹500 crore in direct assistance. Modi announced that around 7,000 houses would be built for families who lost their homes and that special measures are being rolled out for tribal youth.
&ldquo;I am fully aware of the aspirations and struggles of Manipur&rsquo;s tribal youth. The government is taking steps to address their concerns and create opportunities,&rdquo; he assured.
Saturday&rsquo;s visit, laden with symbolism, marked Modi&rsquo;s first trip to the violence-hit state in two years. It comes at a time when New Delhi is seeking to project stability in the Northeast and reassure communities still grappling with the aftershocks of ethnic strife.
