Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday strongly condemned the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, describing the incident as &ldquo;unbearably tragic&rdquo; and warning that mob rule must not be allowed to take over democratic societies. Expressing concern over the prevailing situation in the neighbouring country, Tharoor stressed the need for peace, rule of law and the restoration of democratic processes.
The victim, identified as 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched by a mob in the Mymensingh district. The killing has triggered widespread concern amid growing unrest in Bangladesh. Authorities have confirmed that seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Tharoor questioned the interim administration in Bangladesh on the concrete steps being taken to punish those responsible and prevent similar incidents in the future. While acknowledging the official condemnation of the killing, he emphasised that accountability and preventive action were equally important to ensure such violence does not recur.
Highlighting the broader implications of the unrest, Tharoor said the situation was worrying not only for Bangladesh but also for its relations with India. He reiterated that stability and peace in the region were essential, especially as Bangladesh is scheduled to hold elections in February. He added that mob violence and lawlessness would undermine democratic aspirations in the country.
The lynching occurred against the backdrop of heightened tensions following the killing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure in last year&rsquo;s July uprising. Hadi was shot by unidentified attackers in Dhaka on December 12 and later died while undergoing treatment abroad. His death sparked protests across the country, some of which turned violent.
In the aftermath of the lynching, unrest spread to several cities, with demonstrations held near Indian diplomatic missions and attacks reported on newspaper offices. Some protests reportedly carried strong anti-India undertones, adding to concerns about regional stability.
Tharoor also referred to recent provocative statements made by certain political elements in Bangladesh, warning that irresponsible rhetoric and unchecked agitation could further inflame tensions. He stressed the importance of democratic discipline and mutual respect between neighbouring countries to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
