Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will not be present at the 10th meeting of the NITI Aayog Governing Council, which will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the capital on Saturday.
According to a source close to the Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah&rsquo;s absence is due to a prior commitment in Mysuru. &ldquo;The Chief Minister is not boycotting the meeting, but he has a prior engagement in Mysuru,&rdquo; the source told a news agency.&nbsp;
The source added that Siddaramaiah has sent his address for the council meeting to New Delhi, though it was not specified who would deliver the address on his behalf during the session.
In Kerala&rsquo;s case, sources indicated that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has nominated state Finance Minister K N Balagopal to attend in his place. However, since the meeting is specifically intended for Chief Ministers, it remains uncertain whether Balagopal will be permitted to take part. No official reason was cited for Vijayan&rsquo;s decision to remain absent.
This is not the first time Vijayan has missed such a meeting. He did not attend the previous NITI Aayog meeting involving Chief Ministers in Delhi last year and had also sent Balagopal to represent him on that occasion.
The meeting, the 10th of its kind, will centre on state-level development strategies as part of India&rsquo;s goal to become a developed country by the year 2047.&nbsp;
The official theme for this session is &lsquo;Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat@2047&rsquo;, according to a government statement.
