India has formally taken up the issue of recent racial attacks on its citizens in Ireland with the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (HREC), calling for stronger measures to ensure the safety and rights of the Indian community.
Indian Ambassador Akhilesh Mishra met HREC Chief Commissioner Liam Herrick earlier this week for what officials described as a &ldquo;productive exchange of views&rdquo; on the situation. The discussion focused on the spate of attacks targeting Indian nationals and the need for concerted efforts to protect them, along with other minority groups.
During the meeting, Herrick outlined steps already being implemented &ldquo;in an institutionalised manner&rdquo; to monitor and address racism-related incidents and discrimination in workplaces, schools, and society at large. He also assured &ldquo;full cooperation and support&rdquo; to the Indian Embassy and the diaspora community.
Acknowledging the significant contribution of the Indian diaspora to Ireland&rsquo;s economy, technology sector, healthcare system, and cultural landscape, Herrick reiterated his commitment to working closely with Indian authorities.
Ireland is home to nearly 80,000 people of Indian origin, including around 33,898 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), 40,000 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), and about 10,000 students. A large section of the community is engaged in healthcare, IT, engineering, and management roles.
In recent years, Ireland has also emerged as an important destination for Indian students, particularly those pursuing postgraduate, doctoral, and post-doctoral studies.
