A subsidised housing unit under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), meant to assist economically weaker and low-income groups, has been allotted to the son of a sitting BJP MLA in Gujarat, prompting a wave of criticism and demands for investigation.
Mohit Chavda, son of Meghji Chavda, BJP MLA representing Kalavad in Jamnagar district, was granted a flat by the Dhrol Municipality under the central housing scheme. The decision has drawn scrutiny due to the Chavda family's significant wealth and asset holdings.
Jitu Chavda from the Dhrol civic body confirmed the development, stating, &ldquo;Yes, it is true that the application form of Meghjibhai&rsquo;s son Mohit has been approved and the benefit has been granted.&rdquo;
The PMAY programme is intended for citizens belonging to economically weaker sections and low-income categories. However, official records and public documents show that the Chavda family holds considerable assets, including approximately 50 acres of farmland and multiple vehicles. Meghji Chavda had disclosed in his election nomination papers ownership of agricultural land in four villages, two cars, and a residence.
Despite these holdings, Mohit Chavda, who reportedly moved out after marriage, applied separately for a government flat. His father, Meghji Chavda, responded to the backlash by saying, &ldquo;When he [my son] applied for a house, I was not serving as an MLA. Moreover, after marriage, Mohit lived separately and needed a home.&rdquo;
Critics argue that regardless of familial separation, the financial situation of the applicant should have aligned with the scheme&rsquo;s strict eligibility norms. Concerns have been raised about whether the application accurately reflected Mohit&rsquo;s financial status, especially since both he and his father possess vehicles.
Elected from a Scheduled Caste-reserved seat in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections, Meghji Chavda now faces calls for a thorough review of the allotment. Civil society organisations and opposition figures have demanded a detailed inquiry into the process, questioning the integrity of the selection mechanism under PMAY.
While Dhrol municipal authorities have yet to issue an official explanation, state housing officials are expected to assess the matter further. The incident adds to previous concerns raised over the implementation of the PMAY scheme in Gujarat, where activists have flagged repeated allegations of undue influence and political bias in housing allocations.
