On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s visit to Bhavnagar, Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil questioned the timing of the trip and highlighted unfulfilled promises to the city over the past two decades.
Modi is scheduled to launch and dedicate projects worth over Rs 34,000 crore under the &ldquo;Samudra Se Samriddhi&rdquo; initiative, ahead of the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation elections and other local polls. A roadshow involving thousands is also planned.
At a press meet at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, Gohil alleged that previous announcements by Modi, both as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister, have not materialized in Bhavnagar. He cited projects including the Kalpsar project, the Dahej&ndash;Hansot four-lane highway, a 136 km direct road link between Bhavnagar and Surat, a broad-gauge railway line, the &ldquo;Golden Corridor,&rdquo; an international-level Diamond Park, and new GIDC estates. Promises to develop ports at Mahuva, Sartampur, and Mithi Virdi have also remained unimplemented.
Gohil urged the Prime Minister to apologize to Bhavnagar residents for repeated unfulfilled assurances. The Congress also demanded the restoration of the Narendra Modi cricket stadium in Ahmedabad to honor Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, special economic packages for diamond and ship-breaking workers, fair prices for cotton, onion, and peanut farmers, and the enactment of a permanent Minimum Support Price (MSP) law.
The party further called for an aerial survey of areas affected by recent heavy rainfall, direct engagement with farmers, and the conferring of the Bharat Ratna on Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji. Gohil also raised the closure of the Alcock Ashdown shipbuilding company, a major local employer, as an issue requiring urgent attention.
