Talks between the Centre and representatives from Ladakh, which were suspended nearly three weeks ago, are set to resume on October 22 &mdash; raising hopes of a breakthrough in the prolonged deadlock over statehood and constitutional safeguards for the Union Territory.
An eight-member delegation, including leaders from the Leh Apex Body (LAB), the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), Ladakh MP Mohd Haneefa Jan, and lawyer Haji Mustafa, will hold discussions with a Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) sub-committee in Delhi. 
The meeting will focus on the restoration of statehood and the inclusion of Ladakh under the Constitution&rsquo;s Sixth Schedule, which grants autonomy to tribal regions.
The resumption of talks follows the Centre&rsquo;s decision to launch a judicial inquiry into the September 24 violence in Ladakh, where four people lost their lives and more than 100 were injured during demonstrations demanding statehood and safeguards for jobs and land. 
The unrest also resulted in the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA).
Leaders from the LAB and KDA have welcomed the Centre&rsquo;s initiative and voiced optimism about achieving positive results. 
They are also seeking compensation for the families of those killed and the release of detained protesters.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while speaking at an event in Patna, appealed for patience, assuring that a &ldquo;good resolution&rdquo; to Ladakh&rsquo;s issues is in sight.
Should the October 22 discussions yield progress, the matter will advance to the High-Powered Committee headed by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai.
The demand for statehood and Sixth Schedule status has persisted since August 2019, when Ladakh was separated from Jammu and Kashmir but left without its own legislative assembly.
