Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday announced that the Central government has released ₹587 crore to assist 36,703 households whose homes were damaged during the recent floods in Punjab.
Speaking at an event in Ludhiana, Chouhan said that each affected household will receive ₹1.2 lakh for repairing damaged houses, along with ₹40,000 for constructing toilets, in addition to coverage for labour costs. 
&ldquo;The Centre stands firmly with the people of Punjab in their time of need,&rdquo; the minister said.
He further stated that the Centre has also disbursed ₹74 crore for free wheat seeds and ₹3.24 crore for mustard seeds to aid farmers affected by the floods. 
&ldquo;Moreover, ₹222 crore has been released in advance under the PM Kisan Nidhi Yojana to provide immediate assistance to the farmers,&rdquo; Chouhan added.
Highlighting the Centre&rsquo;s continued support for Punjab&rsquo;s agricultural sector, Chouhan noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already announced a ₹1,600-crore relief package for the state. 
&ldquo;As per the federal structure, the Centre will release additional funds once the state government submits its memorandum,&rdquo; he said.
During his speech, Chouhan urged Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to reconsider the state&rsquo;s decision to opt out of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, emphasizing that the move had left farmers without essential crop insurance coverage. 
&ldquo;This scheme protects farmers from losses due to natural calamities. I appeal to the state government to rejoin and ensure farmers are not left vulnerable,&rdquo; he said.
