The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the leading force in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) bypolls, clinching 7 of the 12 wards that went to vote on November 30. 
The results were announced on Monday.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 3 wards, while the Congress and the All India Forward Bloc secured one seat each.
The bypolls were conducted after 12 MCD wards fell vacant, 11 councillors were elected as MLAs in the Delhi Assembly polls, and one became an MP after the Parliamentary elections. 
Voting took place across Mundka, Shalimar Bagh-B, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Dwarka-B, Dichaon Kalan, Naraina, Sangam Vihar-A, Dakshin Puri, Greater Kailash and Vinod Nagar.
In the 2022 MCD elections, AAP had won a majority with 134 seats, followed by BJP with 104. 
The Congress claimed 9 seats, while Independents won 3. 
The political landscape has since shifted as several councillors moved to higher offices, triggering the need for bypolls.
Among the high-profile wards this year was Shalimar Bagh-B, previously represented by current Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. 
Her election to the Assembly left the seat open for contest. 
Another key ward, Dwarka-B, was vacated after BJP leader Kamaljeet Sehrawat, who had defeated AAP&rsquo;s Sudha Sinha in 2022, went on to win the West Delhi Lok Sabha seat in 2024 by a margin of 1,99,013 votes.
With its strong performance in the bypolls, the BJP has reinforced its position in the MCD, setting the stage for heightened political competition in the national capital.
