President Donald Trump&rsquo;s campaign rhetoric often revolved around sweeping promises to rid the country of illegal immigrants. Upon taking office, he quickly began implementing these pledges. In just three days, his administration declared a state of emergency at the southern border with Mexico, mobilized military units to the area, and arrested 538 undocumented immigrants, deporting hundreds soon after.
While these moves made headlines and bolstered his domestic support base, the logistical and economic implications of Trump&rsquo;s mass deportation plans are staggering. Though the symbolic actions appease political supporters, eliminating the entire undocumented labour force from the U.S. poses an insurmountable challenge. More importantly, it could severely damage the American economy.
The Numbers Behind the Workforce
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the total U.S. workforce comprises 163.8 million people. Of these, 81.5% are U.S.-born citizens, while 18.6% are foreign-born workers, both documented and undocumented. This translates to nearly 30 million foreign workers, including around 7 million undocumented immigrants.
Illegal migrants fill critical gaps in the U.S. labour market. In industries such as construction, hospitality, agriculture, and manufacturing, undocumented workers form a vital segment of the workforce. The American Industries Report reveals the following statistics:

However, deporting millions of undocumented workers would exacerbate the existing labor shortage.
As of December 2024, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reported 8 million job openings, with only 6.8 million unemployed workers to fill them. Deporting even 1 million undocumented workers could leave critical industries scrambling to meet demand, leading to supply chain disruptions, slower growth, and increased consumer costs.

The Financial Contributions of Undocumented Workers
Despite their undocumented status, these workers significantly contribute to the U.S. economy. Collectively, they pay an estimated $12 billion in federal taxes and $25 billion in state and local taxes annually. Losing this revenue would place additional strain on government budgets, particularly for programs reliant on these funds.
Furthermore, mass deportation would come with a hefty price tag. Economists estimate that deporting the undocumented workforce could reduce the U.S. GDP by 5% to 6.5%, wiping out hundreds of billions of dollars in economic output. In addition, deporting undocumented parents would leave millions of U.S.-born children behind. Even assuming just one-third of these children remain in the U.S., the cost of raising them to adulthood would amount to $150 billion.

Deporting undocumented workers en masse would leave industries understaffed, disrupt economic stability, and slow national growth. In sectors like agriculture, where margins are already slim, a sudden labour shortage could lead to skyrocketing food prices. The construction industry, a critical driver of infrastructure and housing, would also face significant setbacks without its 1.25 million undocumented workers.
Additionally, American workers are unlikely to fill these gaps at the same wages. Many undocumented workers take on physically demanding jobs for less than $10 per hour. Convincing U.S. citizens to accept these positions&mdash;often with poor working conditions and minimal benefits&mdash;poses another challenge.

Is America Ready to Pay the Price?
The economic repercussions of Trump&rsquo;s mass deportation dream extend far beyond labour shortages and tax losses. The societal costs, from broken families to strained public services, would add further weight to an already precarious situation. While the rhetoric of deporting undocumented immigrants may appeal to nationalist sentiments, the practical implications paint a far grimmer picture.
America must ask itself: Is the nation prepared for slower economic growth, labour shortages, and billions of dollars in additional costs? Will Americans take up the roles left vacant, and if so, at what cost to productivity and efficiency? More importantly, is the symbolic act of mass deportation worth jeopardizing the country&rsquo;s economic backbone?
The reality is clear: undocumented immigrants are not just numbers on a deportation list. They are integral to the U.S. economy&rsquo;s functionality. Removing them en masse would leave America weaker, not stronger. Achieving &ldquo;America First&rdquo; requires addressing these complexities, not ignoring them for the sake of political optics.
