Not merely a passing headline, but a deep social churn, as states grapple with demands from powerful communities seeking inclusion in the reservation framework. Maharashtra&rsquo;s recent decision to recognise&nbsp;Marathas as Kunbis, thereby extending OBC benefits, reflects the expanding contest for quotas. But it also poses a fundamental question: Is India creating a healthy society through affirmative action, or an unhealthy one perpetually fractured by competing entitlements?
<h3 data-start="1259" data-end="1296">The Expanding Quota Battlefield</h3>
The Marathas are not alone. Jats in Haryana, Koli and Thakor&nbsp;in Gujarat, Kapu community in Andhra Pradesh, and Madiga groups in Karnataka have all pressed for reservation. Beyond caste, Dalit Christians and Muslims have demanded Scheduled Caste status. Each agitation builds pressure on governments, which often yield in fear of losing political capital. What was once a constitutional tool to remedy historic injustice has now morphed into a race for preferential treatment.
The Mandal Commission in 1979 institutionalised OBC quotas, while the 103rd Constitutional Amendment (2019)introduced a 10% quota for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), breaching the 50% ceiling upheld by the Supreme Court in the landmark Indra Sawhney case (1992). Though the Court in Janhit Abhiyan v. Union of India (2022)upheld the EWS quota by distinguishing it from caste-based reservations, the message was clear: political expediency often trumps constitutional restraint.

This framework reflects Ambedkar&rsquo;s pragmatism. He never sought a rigid timeline but emphasised that reservations should continue until real equality was achieved. He opposed perpetual reservation, but equally warned that premature withdrawal would deepen inequality.
<h3 data-start="3217" data-end="3265">Political Compulsions, Social Consequences</h3>
No political party in India dares to challenge the reservation structure. The fear is palpable: alienating a caste group can mean electoral annihilation. Hence, instead of reform, governments quietly encourage newer communities to demand inclusion, whether through OBC categories or the newer EWS tag.
The result is a vicious cycle&mdash;as one group secures benefits, another feels relatively deprived. This relative deprivation theory explains why dominant agrarian communities like Marathas, Patidar, and Jats&mdash;historically influential in politics and landownership&mdash;mobilise for quotas.
<h3 data-start="3865" data-end="3908">Are We Weakening the Next Generation?</h3>
Beyond politics, the socio-economic costs are glaring. Instead of nurturing a competitive mindset, the state risks creating a generation dependent on reservation crutches. In education and government jobs&mdash;the very spaces meant to cultivate excellence&mdash;merit risks being compromised. Critics argue that India cannot aspire to global leadership if its youth are conditioned to seek entitlement over enterprise.
The Supreme Court, in cases like M. Nagaraj (2006) and Jarnail Singh (2018), has attempted to refine the policy by introducing concepts like the creamy layer and requiring data-backed justifications. Yet, the political class finds ways around such directives, often prioritising short-term electoral gains over long-term societal balance.
<h3 data-start="4687" data-end="4728">The Silent Anguish of the &lsquo;Unaided&rsquo;</h3>
The upper castes, who traditionally remained outside reservation categories, increasingly feel the pinch. The EWS quotawas in part a political response to this grievance. But here lies the paradox: by granting even the privileged a quota based on income criteria, India risks normalising reservation as the default route for opportunity rather than the exception.
<h3 data-start="5106" data-end="5142">A Nation Divided or Empowered?</h3>
The underlying question is not whether reservation should exist&mdash;it must, as a corrective measure against centuries of oppression&mdash;but whether indiscriminate expansion serves the nation&rsquo;s future. Reservation should aim to empower the marginalised, not become a competitive entitlement for the relatively privileged.
India today faces a stark choice. Either it strengthens institutions, creates genuine opportunities, and prepares its youth for global competition&mdash;or it risks remaining trapped in a quota-centric polity, where every community measures progress not by achievement, but by entitlement.
As Ambedkar foresaw, true equality lies not in perpetual quotas but in transforming society. Unless India rethinks its approach, the reservation discourse may erode the very meritocracy needed to propel it as a knowledge and economic power in the 21st century.
