Recent intelligence <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/khalistani-terrorist-group-sikhs-for-justice-led-by-gurpatwant-singh-pannun-incited-manipur-christians-to-secede-says-india-7601677#pfrom=home-ndtv_topscroll">reports</a> suggest that the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), led by the designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, has allegedly been inciting various communities to demand separate nations and states: Khalistan for Sikhs, Dravidstan for South Indians, Urduistan for Muslims, and even a separate Christian state in Manipur.&nbsp; According to a background note from intelligence agencies, SFJ has been &ldquo;dividing people on communal lines by provoking minority communities against the other communities&rdquo; to further its anti-India agenda.&nbsp;
The note also claims that SFJ has been involved in stirring unrest in Punjab and Haryana during the farm protests. The group has reportedly made threats against top officials like Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Shah, and National Security Adviser Doval. With 104 cases filed against SFJ members across India, it&rsquo;s clear the government has serious reasons for concern.
The Indian government has responded by extending the ban on SFJ for another five years.&nbsp; Sure, the SFJ's rhetoric sounds alarming, but are these are built on political or social realities, or is it just bluster, built on fantasy?
When we take a closer look at what&rsquo;s actually happening on the ground, there&rsquo;s a noticeable gap between these separatist dreams and reality situation.
Take Manipur, for example. The violence there, which has led to over 250 deaths and displaced 50,000 people, stem from deep-rooted local issues&mdash;primarily the conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities over land rights and political representation. While SFJ might try to frame this as a religious issue that justifies breaking away, the reality is much more complex. It&rsquo;s primarily a political and social struggle, not part of a larger separatist agenda.
Then there&rsquo;s the alleged push for Tamil separatism. Despite SFJ&rsquo;s calls to raise &ldquo;Dravidstan&rdquo; flags, Tamil Nadu&rsquo;s political landscape remains firmly integrated with the rest of India. Tamil political parties have long been key players in national coalitions, showing that regional aspirations can be channelled within India&rsquo;s existing framework, without resorting to separation.
Besides, the idea of a Tamil state isn't even new. In a typical case of "asked and answered", SFJ's call is a throwback to Periyar's Dravida Nadu Movement of the 1940s.&nbsp;
Similarly, the idea of &ldquo;Urduistan&rdquo; for Muslims also doesn&rsquo;t seem to match reality either. While there are certainly issues facing India&rsquo;s Muslim communities, there&rsquo;s no significant movement among them calling for a separate state. Instead, most Indian Muslims are focused on achieving equality and representation within India&rsquo;s framework, not dividing the country.
Recent events in Canada add another layer to this story. When a Kuki-Zo leader&rsquo;s speech at the same gurdwara in Canada's Surrey, whose chief and Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead by unidentified people in June 2023, caused controversy, it revealed more about the politics of the diaspora than any real separatist threat.&nbsp;As one Kuki-Zo communications professional pointed out, claims of cooperation between separatist groups often turn out to be more about imagined conspiracies than actual alliances.
The Indian government has responded to these threats with firmness, and this vigilance is important, but it&rsquo;s also crucial to remember that India&rsquo;s strength lies in its diversity and unity. The country, though not perfect, provides ways to address regional issues without threatening its territorial integrity.
This doesn&rsquo;t mean the threat of separatism should be ignored. SFJ&rsquo;s activities&mdash;like targeting diplomats or stoking tension abroad&mdash;are genuine concerns. But the gap between separatist rhetoric and the reality on the ground highlights a bigger challenge: how to strengthen India&rsquo;s federal system to better address the diverse needs and aspirations of its people.
The idea of breaking India into smaller pieces remains just that&mdash;a fantasy. While separatist groups may try to exploit local tensions and international platforms, India&rsquo;s democratic institutions and federal structure have proven remarkably resilient. Moving forward, the focus should be on reinforcing the democratic processes that allow India&rsquo;s many communities to thrive together, as one.
