The Indian stock market began Friday's session on a weak note, with the Sensex falling 290 points (0.35%) to 81,894 and the Nifty down 110 points (0.44%) to 24,943, reflecting selling pressure amid mixed global cues.
Auto stocks led the decline, slipping 0.70%, followed by FMCG and metal stocks. Nifty Bank also dipped by 0.14% to 56,983. Broad-based selling pushed the BSE smallcap index down 0.68% and midcap index down 0.45%.
Among sectoral indices, most remained flat except auto, media, FMCG, metal, and oil &amp; gas which saw losses.
Top gainers in early trade included SBI Life, Dr. Reddy&rsquo;s, NTPC, and Apollo Hospitals, while Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Jio Financial, and TCS were among the top losers.
Analysts noted that the recent India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is a key positive, with potential benefits for sectors like textiles, leather, pharma, automobiles, and gems &amp; jewellery.
Asian markets were mixed&mdash;Hang Seng fell 0.99%, Nikkei dropped 0.61%, while KOSPI edged up 0.46%. US markets were stable with the Dow Jones in red, but NASDAQ and S&amp;P 500 in green.
On July 24, FIIs were net sellers for the fifth day, offloading equities worth ₹2,134 crore, while DIIs continued buying for the 12th day, investing ₹2,617 crore.
