The Indian stock market staged a strong comeback on Monday, with the Sensex surging 746 points amid renewed foreign institutional investor (FII) buying, robust PSU bank earnings, and healthy mutual fund inflows.
The 30-share BSE Sensex closed at 80,604.08, up 0.93%, after touching an intraday high of 80,636.05. The NSE Nifty also ended higher at 24,585.05, gaining 221.75 points or 0.91%.
Analysts attributed the rally to a relief rebound from a three-month low, positive global cues, and easing geopolitical concerns ahead of the upcoming US-Russia summit.
"The return of FIIs and strong mutual fund inflows supported the rally," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.
PSU banks led the charge, with Tata Motors, Adani Ports, SBI, L&amp;T, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Axis Bank, and HDFC Bank among the top gainers. Only a few stocks, including Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank, ended marginally lower.
Sectoral indices mirrored the upbeat mood: Nifty Fin Services rose 0.91%, Nifty Bank gained 0.92%, Nifty Auto advanced 1%, and Nifty IT added 0.42%. Broader markets also rallied, with Nifty Next 50 jumping 1.17% and Nifty 100 rising 0.96%.
Mutual fund data from AMFI showed net equity inflows of ₹42,702 crore in July, up 81% from June, boosting investor confidence. The industry&rsquo;s AUM hit ₹75.36 lakh crore by the end of July.
Meanwhile, gold prices softened as hopes for a Russia-Ukraine resolution triggered profit booking. COMEX gold slipped to $3,355, while MCX gold fell ₹1,200 to ₹1,00,550. Analysts expect gold to trade between ₹99,500 and ₹1,02,000 this week, with US CPI data in focus.
