Indian stock markets ended sharply lower on Friday, witnessing broad-based selling across sectors and indices. The Sensex dropped 721 points or 0.88%, closing at 81,463.09, while the Nifty fell 225 points or 0.90%, ending the day at 24,837.
Opening weak, the Sensex plunged over 950 points intraday, hitting a low of 81,397.69. Market sentiment remained bearish as investors booked profits and stayed cautious ahead of next week&rsquo;s US Fed interest rate decision.
Key sectors, including Auto, IT, PSU Banks, Oil &amp; Gas, and Media, bore the brunt. Bajaj Finance, Infosys, Tata Motors, SBI, and NTPC were among the top losers. Only Sun Pharma and Bharti Airtel closed in green on the Sensex.

Meanwhile, the rupee weakened by 0.13%, breaching 86.50 against the US dollar, which gained strength to near 97.68 levels. Market experts attribute the fall to global volatility and profit booking.
"Investors are cautious ahead of the Fed decision. In the near term, the rupee is expected to trade in the 86&ndash;87 range," said Jateen Trivedi of LKP Securities.
