Indian equity benchmarks ended lower on Monday, breaking a four-day winning streak as investors locked in profits amid weak domestic cues and ahead of key global events.
The BSE Sensex fell 452 points (0.54%) to close at 83,606.46, while the NSE Nifty slipped 120.75 points (0.47%) to end at 25,517.05. Both indices saw intra-day volatility, with the Sensex swinging between 84,099.53 and 83,482.13.
Despite the correction in frontline indices, broader markets outperformed. The Nifty Midcap100 rose 0.6%, and the Nifty Smallcap100 gained 0.52%, reflecting continued retail interest.
Among laggards were Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Maruti, Bajaj Finance, Reliance, and Bharti Airtel. On the other hand, Trent, SBI, Bharat Electronics, Titan, Bajaj Finserv, and Eicher Motors attracted buying.
Sectoral trends were mixed. Gains were led by PSU banks, with the Nifty PSU Bank index jumping 2.66%. Stocks like Punjab National Bank, Union Bank, Canara Bank, and Indian Bank posted strong gains.
However, indices for Auto, Banks, Financial Services, FMCG, Metals, Realty, Private Banks, and Oil &amp; Gas closed in the red.
According to Vinod Nair of Geojit Financial Services, Indian equities took a breather amid global optimism, focusing now on corporate earnings and mid-cap strength fueled by improving consumer demand and margins.
Meanwhile, India VIX rose 3.2% to 12.78, and the Rupee weakened to 85.70/USD, down 0.21%, ahead of a critical week with US data releases and tariff deadlines. Analysts expect volatility in the 85.35&ndash;86.00 range.
