The Indian stock market opened weak on Wednesday, tracking mixed global cues, as benchmark indices slipped marginally in early trade.
The BSE Sensex fell 112 points, or 0.14 per cent, to 81,531, while the NSE Nifty 50 was down 41 points, or 0.16 per cent, at 24,939. Broader markets underperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 down 0.17 per cent and 0.19 per cent, respectively. Nifty Bank dropped 0.42 per cent.
The decline came after three consecutive sessions of rally, fueled by optimism around GST reforms likely before Diwali. However, analysts flagged concerns over US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s tariff policy, with an August 27 deadline looming for a possible 25 per cent secondary tariff on India.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said the US policy stance &ldquo;devoid of logic and fairness&rdquo; may cap a sustained rally. He added that domestic consumption themes like banking, telecom, automobiles, cement, and healthcare could remain attractive.
Mandar Bhojane of Choice Equity Broking said Nifty is consolidating in a sideways-to-bullish pattern, finding support at major EMA levels. &ldquo;If Nifty sustains above 25,050, it could head towards 25,250 and 25,500 levels in the coming sessions,&rdquo; he noted.
Globally, Asia-Pacific markets mirrored Wall Street&rsquo;s weakness. Japan&rsquo;s Nikkei fell 1.52 per cent after exports dropped 2.6 per cent YoY in July, the steepest fall in four years. Hong Kong&rsquo;s Hang Seng slipped 0.41 per cent, South Korea&rsquo;s KOSPI fell 1.86 per cent, and China&rsquo;s indices edged lower.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones rose 0.02 per cent, but the NASDAQ sank 1.46 per cent and the S&amp;P 500 fell 0.59 per cent.
Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold Indian equities worth ₹634 crore on Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) remained strong buyers, pumping in ₹2,261 crore.
