Indian equity benchmarks ended slightly lower on Thursday after a volatile session marked by weekly expiry jitters and cautious investor sentiment amid expectations of a possible India-US trade deal.
The Sensex rose to an intra-day high of 83,850, but reversed gains to close 170.22 points (0.2%) down at 83,239.7. Similarly, the Nifty slipped 48.1 points (0.19%) to finish at 25,405.3.
Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking noted that markets continue to consolidate and that the bullish trend remains intact unless Nifty breaches the 25,200 support. Resistance is expected in the 25,650&ndash;25,750 range.
Top losers on the Sensex included Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, SBI, and Trent, while Maruti Suzuki, Infosys, NTPC, Asian Paints, and HUL helped cushion the fall.
In the broader market, Nifty Midcap100 closed flat with a positive bias, while Nifty Smallcap100 edged 0.26% lower. The PSU Bank index was the worst performer among sectoral indices, falling 0.89%.
Sectors like metals, realty, banking, and financials declined, whereas media, auto, pharma, healthcare, oil &amp; gas, and FMCG sectors saw selective buying.
Meanwhile, the Indian rupee hit a one-month high, buoyed by optimism over foreign capital inflows tied to an upcoming India-US trade agreement. The USD/INR exchange is expected to find near-term support at 84.95, with resistance at 85.70, said Dilip Parmar of HDFC Securities.
