Domestic equity markets ended higher on Monday, snapping a three-day losing streak as buying interest returned to IT, auto, and select banking stocks amid optimism about a potential resolution to the US government shutdown.
The Sensex closed at 83,535.35, gaining 319 points (0.38%), after touching an intraday high of 83,754.49. The Nifty also advanced 82 points (0.32%) to finish at 25,574.35.
Market sentiment improved as renewed foreign institutional investor (FII) buying and strong Q2 earnings lifted confidence. The rise in the US 10-year Treasury yield reflected improved global risk appetite, while positive domestic macroeconomic indicators supported expectations of stronger earnings growth in the second half of FY26.
Among major gainers on the Sensex were Infosys, HCL Tech, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, Titan, L&amp;T, Asian Paints, and Maruti Suzuki. On the other hand, Trent, PowerGrid, Ultratech Cement, Axis Bank, and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra ended lower.
Sector-wise, most indices closed in the green. Nifty IT rose 1.62%, Nifty Auto added 0.30%, Nifty Financial Services gained 0.24%, and Nifty Bank moved up 0.10%, while Nifty FMCG declined slightly.
Broader markets also strengthened, with Nifty Midcap 100 up 0.47%, Nifty Smallcap 100 up 0.35%, and Nifty 100 up 0.33%.
Meanwhile, the rupee traded flat at 88.66, supported by RBI&rsquo;s possible intervention near the 88.75&ndash;88.90 range, limiting downside movement. Traders now await inflation data from India and the US, which is expected to influence short-term market direction.
