Indian stock markets opened on a negative note on Monday, dragged down by global uncertainty over U.S. trade policy and continued selling in key sectors, particularly IT.
At 9:19 AM, the Sensex dropped 212 points (0.24%) to 82,301, while the Nifty slipped 49 points (0.20%) to 25,104. Despite the weak broader trend, marginal gains were seen in midcap and smallcap segments. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.16%, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 edged up 0.14%.
Analysts attribute the ongoing pressure to weakness in IT stocks and foreign investor outflows. "The bearish sentiment may continue as FIIs were major sellers last Friday," said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.
However, the banking and financial sectors showed relative strength. &ldquo;This outperformance may sustain, and dips in banking stocks could present buying opportunities, especially as markets have priced in NIM compression expected in Q1 results,&rdquo; he added.
Sectoral performance was mixed. Auto, PSU banks, metal, realty, and energy traded in the green, while IT, financial services, pharma, FMCG, media, and infra sectors declined.
Among major gainers were Trent, Power Grid, Sun Pharma, Titan, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki, Axis Bank, SBI, and Tata Steel. Losers included Bajaj Finance, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Tata Motors, and HUL.
On the institutional front, FIIs sold equities worth ₹5,104 crore on July 11, while DIIs were net buyers at ₹3,558 crore.
Asian markets traded mixed as renewed U.S.-EU trade tensions rattled investor sentiment. The recent 30% tariff announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on European Union and Mexican imports, effective August 1, added pressure, though the EU has postponed its countermeasures to allow for further dialogue.
