The Indian stock market closed lower on Tuesday as traders stayed cautious ahead of the release of crucial July inflation data from both India and the US, while tariff concerns added to market jitters.
The Sensex fell 368.49 points, or 0.46%, to close at 80,235.59, after opening weak at 80,508.51 compared to the previous close of 80,604.08. The Nifty 50 ended the day down 97.65 points, or 0.40%, at 24,487.40.
Top losers on the Sensex included Bajaj Finance, Trent, Hindustan Unilever, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finserv, BEL, ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, and Reliance Industries. Gainers included Maruti Suzuki, Tech Mahindra, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, NTPC, Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, and Titan.
Sectorally, most indices ended in the red. Nifty Financial Services fell 1.02%, Nifty Bank dropped 0.84%, and Nifty FMCG slipped 0.50%. On the other hand, Nifty IT and Nifty Auto managed to close in positive territory.
In the broader market, Nifty Next 50 and Nifty Smallcap 100 ended flat, while Nifty Midcap 100 declined by 0.27%.
Global trade developments, particularly around US&ndash;China tariffs, kept investors on edge. Market experts believe US inflation readings could impact the Federal Reserve&rsquo;s next policy stance, while domestic inflation is likely to remain under the Reserve Bank of India&rsquo;s target range.
The rupee remained flat near 87.70 against the US dollar, pressured by firm crude oil prices. The dollar index hovered around 98.30 as traders awaited the US CPI data for further direction.
