The Indian stock market ended higher on Thursday, extending its winning streak to the fourth straight session despite a soft start in the morning trade.
The Sensex closed at 81,548.73, gaining 123.58 points or 0.15 per cent, after opening lower at 81,217.30 against the previous close of 81,425.15. The index touched an intraday high of 81,642, recovering more than 400 points from the day&rsquo;s low. Nifty settled above the key 25,000 mark at 25,005.50, up 32.40 points or 0.13 per cent.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, said, &ldquo;The Nifty50 index has closed above the critical threshold of 25,000. The unexpected imposition of a 50 per cent tariff on India by the US initially dragged the index to 24,400, but steady recovery was seen.&rdquo; He attributed the rebound to expectations of limited domestic impact, India&rsquo;s strategic policy response, and reforms such as GST to offset trade risks.
Top Sensex gainers included NTPC, Axis Bank, Eternal, PowerGrid, Bharti Airtel, Sun Pharma, SBI, Asian Paints and TCS, while Infosys, Titan, Ultratech Cement, Hindustan Unilever, BEL, Trent, Tata Motors and Tech Mahindra declined.
Most sectoral indices ended positive. Nifty Fin Services rose 54 points (0.21%), Nifty Bank gained 133 points (0.24%), and Nifty FMCG advanced 103 points (0.18%). However, Nifty Auto and Nifty IT closed lower. Broader indices were range-bound, with Nifty Small Cap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 flat, while Nifty Next 50 and Nifty 100 edged up.
The rupee weakened 0.35% to 88.40 against the US dollar amid mixed FII flows and a stronger dollar index. Jateen Trivedi of LKP Securities noted that focus remains on the US CPI data, which could sway currency volatility. Crude prices stayed volatile but hovered at lower levels, providing some relief.
Analysts said market sentiment will continue to track developments in the US-India trade deal, while the rupee is expected to trade in a range of 87.85&ndash;88.10 as support and 88.55&ndash;88.70 as resistance.
