Indian equity markets ended on a cautious note Thursday, with the Sensex and Nifty closing marginally higher after a highly volatile session.
The Sensex surged more than 900 points in early trade, opening at 81,456.67 on optimism around sweeping GST reforms. However, profit booking and weakness in IT stocks trimmed gains, with the index settling at 80,718.01, up 150.30 points or 0.19 per cent. The Nifty ended at 24,734.30, up 19.25 points or 0.08 per cent.
Auto, financials, and FMCG stocks supported the indices, while IT, energy, and realty dragged. Broader indices underperformed, with Nifty Smallcap 100 falling 0.71 per cent and Nifty Midcap 100 slipping 0.87 per cent.
Top Sensex gainers included Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Trent, ITC, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Asian Paints. Major losers were Maruti, Infosys, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and UltraTech Cement.
Sectorally, Nifty Auto gained 0.91 per cent, Nifty Financial Services rose 0.47 per cent, and FMCG added 0.24 per cent, while Nifty IT dropped 0.94 per cent.
The rupee closed weaker at 88.11 against the US dollar, down 0.07, as foreign investors remained net sellers despite optimism over GST rationalisation.
Analysts believe GST 2.0 reforms may boost consumption-led recovery, especially in auto, FMCG, metals, and infrastructure sectors linked to rural demand.
