Domestic equity markets closed lower on Thursday as investor sentiment was dampened by renewed tariff threats from the US. Weakness in auto, metal, and oil stocks dragged indices down, despite global markets staying mostly positive.
The BSE Sensex fell 185 points or 0.23% to close at 80,358, while the NSE Nifty dipped 54 points or 0.22% to end at 24,519.
Among the top Nifty gainers were Hero MotoCorp (+1.27%), Cipla, Trent, Bajaj Finserv, and HDFC Bank. Major losers included Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Jio Financial, and SBI.
Sector-wise, Nifty Metal declined 0.54%, Nifty Auto was down 0.49%, while Nifty Pharma managed a 0.64% gain.
The market reacted to US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s announcement of an additional 25% import tariff on Indian goods, raising total duties to 50%. The tariffs are set to take effect on August 27, targeting India&rsquo;s energy trade with Russia.
&ldquo;The 21-day window before implementation allows room for negotiation, but uncertainty will persist,&rdquo; said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit. He added that export-oriented sectors may see continued pressure, while domestic consumption themes like banking, telecom, hotels, and capital goods could stay resilient.
Despite the drop, about half of India's $80 billion exports to the US, including pharmaceuticals and electronics, remain tariff-exempt.
In the US, tech-driven gains lifted indices overnight. The Nasdaq jumped 1.21%, the S&amp;P 500 rose 0.73%, and the Dow Jones added 0.18%.
Asian markets were largely positive, with Japan&rsquo;s Nikkei 225 up 0.78%, Korea&rsquo;s Kospi rising 0.46%, and Hong Kong&rsquo;s Hang Seng inching up 0.17%. Chinese markets, however, ended in the red.
Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) offloaded ₹4,999 crore worth of Indian equities, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought ₹6,794 crore on Wednesday.
