Indian stock markets opened lower on Friday, weighed down by global uncertainty surrounding US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s escalating tariff threats.
At 9:20 AM, the Sensex slipped 224 points to 82,965, while the Nifty dropped 65 points to 25,289. Market mood was cautious, with traders reacting to the possibility of fresh tariffs affecting multiple sectors and countries.
Despite the weak start, some support came from the midcap and smallcap segments. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.10% to 59,220, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 edged up 0.06% to 18,967.
Analysts are advising a "wait-and-watch" strategy, highlighting volatility and suggesting partial profit booking on rallies with tight stop-losses.
In the Sensex pack, HUL, Asian Paints, Axis Bank, NTPC, and Power Grid posted gains, while TCS, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and HCL Tech led the losers.
Sector-wise, PSU banks, pharma, FMCG, and metal stocks were in the green. Auto, IT, realty, and media dragged.
Globally, Asian markets remained mixed. Japan&rsquo;s Nikkei and Korea&rsquo;s KOSPI traded flat, while China&rsquo;s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong&rsquo;s Hang Seng rose over 1%.
On Wall Street, the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs, signalling continued investor optimism in the US.
Trump&rsquo;s latest announcement of 35% tariffs on Canadian goods&mdash;with a threat of 50% tariffs on Brazil&mdash;has rattled investor confidence worldwide, with the new measures taking effect from August 1.
Meanwhile, FIIs bought ₹221 crore and DIIs ₹591 crore worth of equities on July 10, showing cautious accumulation amid the uncertainty.
