The Indian equity markets closed Monday on a slightly positive note, supported by strong buying in auto and metal counters.
Indices began the session on a high, buoyed by the government&rsquo;s GST reforms announcement, improved sentiment around India-US relations, and rate cuts from key domestic automakers. However, much of the early momentum was lost in the final trading hours due to profit booking and selling pressure in IT heavyweights.
The Sensex ended at 80,787.30, gaining 76.54 points or 0.09 per cent. The 30-share index opened with a healthy gap-up at 80,904.40, compared to the previous close of 80,710.76, before surging nearly 400 points to hit an intraday high of 81,171.38.
The Nifty 50 closed at 24,773.15, up 32.15 points or 0.13 per cent.
&ldquo;The domestic market failed to sustain its early gains as a late-session sell-off reflected the prevailing &lsquo;buy-on-dips, sell-on-rallies&rsquo; strategy, highlighting investor caution,&rdquo; said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.
Auto and ancillary stocks remained in demand on expectations of stronger recovery following GST rate cuts, while IT stocks continued to struggle amid global uncertainties. On the global front, sentiment improved as softer US jobs data fuelled hopes of a Fed rate cut in September, Nair added.
Among the Sensex pack, Tata Motors, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Adani Airports, Bajaj FinServ, Ultratech Cement, Tata Steel, HDFC Bank and BEL were the top gainers. On the flip side, Trent, Asian Paints, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, PowerGrid, TCS, Sun Pharma, L&amp;T, NTPC and Bharti Airtel closed in the red.
Most sectoral indices ended higher. Nifty Auto surged 868.60 points or 3.30 per cent, Nifty Fin Services advanced 53 points or 0.21 per cent, and Nifty Bank climbed 72 points or 0.13 per cent. However, Nifty IT dropped 325 points or 0.94 per cent due to persistent selling pressure.
Broader indices also mirrored the overall market trend. Nifty Small Cap 100 gained 29 points or 0.16 per cent, Nifty Midcap 100 rose 285 points or 0.50 per cent, and Nifty 100 closed 45 points or 0.18 per cent higher.
